Rhiannon has always known Odelia as her lifelong best friend—and as the talented dancer destined for a life beyond their small hometown. But when Odelia arrives in Melbourne and announces she is giving up dance, everything Rhiannon thought she understood about her begins to change. As old memories and hidden feelings surface, the two girls must confront whether their bond is really friendship—or something much deeper.

Synopsis

Rhiannon has grown up believing she knows everything about Odelia, the gifted and determined dancer who has been beside her for most of her life. While their personalities and ambitions have often taken them in different directions, their friendship has remained a constant. But when Odelia arrives in Melbourne and unexpectedly reveals that she plans to abandon dance and completely change the course of her future, Rhiannon is left questioning both her friend’s decision and how well she truly knows her.

Over one unforgettable week, familiar teasing and shared memories gradually give way to more vulnerable conversations. As Odelia struggles to explain why the dream that once defined her no longer feels right, Rhiannon begins recognising feelings she has kept buried beneath years of friendship. Their growing closeness forces both girls to consider what they might lose by admitting the truth—and whether remaining “just friends” is still possible.

Tender, intimate and emotionally authentic, Preferences is a 90-minute LGBTQ+ coming-of-age romance about changing dreams, lifelong friendship and the frightening moment when the person you know best begins to mean something more.
