Time Apart

Nina and Seb are preparing to leave Melbourne and begin a new life together when a mysterious accident causes Seb to vanish. He reappears one year later having aged only a day—and soon disappears again. As Nina’s life moves forward while Seb returns for only a few precious hours each year, their relationship is tested by loneliness, new love and the growing distance between who they were and who they are becoming. Time Apart is an emotional science-fiction romance about waiting, sacrifice and whether love can survive when two people are moving through time at different speeds.

Synopsis

Nina is struggling to begin the career she imagined for herself when she falls for Seb, a carefree musician working beside her at a Melbourne café. Their relationship offers Nina an escape from rejection and uncertainty, and when Seb is invited to join a band on tour, she turns down a promising job opportunity to travel with him. But before their new life can begin, a mysterious accident causes Seb to vanish without explanation.

Seb suddenly reappears one year later, convinced that only a moment has passed. For Nina, the intervening year has brought physical injuries, heartbreak and the painful belief that he abandoned her. When Seb vanishes again directly in front of her, Nina finally understands that he is telling the truth. From then on, he returns at the same time each year, unchanged and unaware of everything that has happened in his absence. Their relationship becomes confined to brief reunions followed by another twelve months of waiting.

Determined to remain faithful to the future they planned, Nina gradually organises her entire life around Seb’s annual return. But as the years pass, isolation and resentment begin to take their toll. Friends move on, careers develop and Nina finds comfort in Jake, a thoughtful colleague who can offer the ordinary, present relationship Seb cannot. Each time Seb returns, however, the connection between them resurfaces—along with guilt, jealousy and the increasingly difficult question of whether Nina is waiting for the man she loves or for a life that no longer exists.

Intimate, bittersweet and grounded in an emotionally accessible science-fiction premise, Time Apart is a romantic drama about love, lost time and the lives people postpone while waiting for the future to begin. Combining a distinctive high-concept story with character-driven relationships, the film asks whether enduring love is defined by how long we wait—or by knowing when it is finally time to let go.
