Lilydale Films has announced that production is underway on two sequels to its LGBTQIA+ coming-of-age feature film Preferences, expanding the story into a trilogy set within the Flunk cinematic universe.

Written and directed by Ric Forster and produced by Melanie Rowland, the trilogy chronicles the long-distance relationship between Rhiannon and Odelia as they attempt to remain connected while navigating distance, change and the uncertainty of their evolving lives.

Georgia Condon and Grace Gemmell return in the leading roles of Rhiannon and Odelia, with Isabelle Weiskov, Keira O’Connor, Perri Cummings, Rebecca Ellery Smith and Robin Hunt appearing in supporting roles.

“Audiences have connected strongly with Rhiannon and Odelia, and we have been excited by the response to their relationship,” said writer and director Ric Forster. “The sequels give us the opportunity to explore what happens after two people decide they want to be together, but circumstances make that relationship difficult to sustain. Long-distance relationships can be romantic, frustrating, intimate and incredibly lonely, and there is a great deal of emotional territory for us to explore across the trilogy.”

The two films are being shot back-to-back on location throughout the Yarra Ranges Shire, the City of Maroondah and the City of Port Phillip, showcasing a diverse range of Victorian landscapes and urban settings.

“The ongoing support of the Flunk audience has allowed this universe to grow far beyond what we initially imagined,” said producer Melanie Rowland. “That support has sustained the series across an unprecedented eight seasons and has also created opportunities to expand the stories of characters audiences want to spend more time with.”

The original Preferences follows Rhiannon and Odelia as their close friendship develops into something more. The two new films will deepen their story, following the couple through the emotional complications of maintaining a relationship across distance while their individual lives continue to change.

The sequels are Lilydale Films productions, written and directed by Ric Forster and produced by Melanie Rowland.

The Preferences trilogy will launch in 2027 on Flunk.com.au and will be available first to YouTube channel members, ahead of its general release on YouTube later in the year.
